CMI Galiza - english, 15.12.2004
Women, migrants and political prisoners are the main victims of the human right's violations in the Spanish penitentiary system, as denounces the last report of the UN relator against the torture. The penintency centers are the space which registers a greater number of cases of sexual aggressions, bad treatments, humiliations and tortures from the state security forces and prisons workers. The situation of total defenselessness of the victims would guarantee impunity of torturators avoided by the mediation of the human rights caretakers that make their work spreading this information and denouncing these facts in the courts.

This is the case of the Arab prisoner who was humiliated and mistreated by the civil employees of the Penitentiary Center of Monterroso in Lugo. A wide group of people who fights in the shadow against who have no shadow was able to seat in the dock these three civil employees who under an acusation of torture now face a pain of incapacitation and prison of five years in prison.

This information will not appear in the covers of the corporative mass media, that will try to silence as much as they can. For this reason the participation in the protest that will take place the next Saturday 18 of December in Lugo. Under the motto Tortures Never Máis! a concentration will begun at 12 hours in the Park Rosalía de Castro of this village. From the 13 hours the concentration will move in caravan of cars until Monte Vacaloura, where the penitentiary of Monterroso is located in which these tortures were perpetrated. A massive attendance to this day of protest is hoped; it is possible assist sharing cars or through bonus to move in bus from Compostela and To Corunna to Lugo.

CMI Galiza - english, 14.12.2004

In 2002 december the 3rd a group of galician citizens tied themselves to the galician Parliament during a plenary session of (inoperant) urgency, spilling the fuel of 6 buckets picked up in the beaches of Lira in the front of their same doors, to state along a few hours the nonviolent protest because the technical work of the political responsibles and their repeated informative manipulation. The furious response of the police caused the admittance of 6 citizens in a hospital going around the world through the international mass media, putting in clear wich was the official response of the fascist governement of Fraga to the justified popular indignation.

A bit later, the three-party Compostela council made a formal complaint related to street furniture damages (including a bill of the firefighters public service!?) wich implies the request of prison to the activists. Wich might be then the proporcional penalty for spilling 77.000 tons of fuel? Wich is the bill of the galician people?

After that, today, 2 years and 11 days after the brutal agression, 2 years and 27 days after the irresponsible shrink of the Prestige, 10 of the identified policewo/men under the commitmen of the well known inspector Enrique León Calviño are gonna be passed through the machinery of their own justice beeing in the dock. The session was postponed until the 2005 february the 1st because the absence of 5 of those policewo/men. The councyl of compostela insisted in their accusation for damages against the activists.

At this moment more than 1,300 million people in the world are poor; 70% are women. More than 840 million adult people they are illiterate; two thirds are women. Women and the children are victims of all type of violence in the world, not only during wars but also daily and in all the continents; genital victims of violations, amputations, forced to hide their body or to undress it and to sell it or condemned to die of hunger.

To reflect the serious situation, in 1999 the UN chooses the 25th of November as the International for the Elimination of the Violence against Woman, commemorating therefore the murder of the Mirabal sisters that day of 1960 by the regime of Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. Conscious that there are necessary something more than declarations to transform this reality, in 2000 started the idea of a World-wide March of Women in the way of a pacifist action wich was able to mobilize anywhere in the world to the set of the feminist movement obtaining the endorsement of ample sectors of the population. Following the international reivindications table, started to work a galician coordinator who was able to agglutinate the galician feminist movement synthesizing local effective actions in order to effectively fight against the poverty and gender violence.

This year spectacular actions taken out by Mulheres Trensgredindo [ 1 | 2 | 3 ], a giant carpet covering the ground of the Praza do Obradoiro, or manifestos as the one of the galician young women against the machist terrorism complements the numerous local acts as a prelude of the saturday 27th demostration, where all women are called to attend dressed red and black. This 25th of November will be, in addition, the departure point of the Campaign against Sexual Violence started by the Mondiale March's collective Peace and Demilitarization, wich will be extended during all this year until the next November 25th of 2005

The problem of the naval sector has its origins in the first crisis of petroleum, when in 1973 the countries of the OPEC drastically increased the price of the barrel to face the israeli military occupation. This situation would cause a reduction in the sea transport and the demand of new ships lowing the working load of the shipyards. The crisis will affect specially the Galician industry wich was specialized in oil tankers building. In order to face the crisis, agravated by the reduction of our production shares as a result of the entrance in the European Economic Union, a process of reconversion of the naval sector would be started, ending in 2000 with the unification by the SEPI of the civilian and military shipyards in the public company IZAR.

After that process, extended for more than twenty years and causing approximately 30,000 dismissals in the whole spanish state, the crisis arises once again. And the solution proposed by the SEPI with the European Commission is a new reconversion based in the segregation of the shipyards, unified during the previous reconversion, conditioning their viability to the privatization of the civil section.

But it might be taked into account that more of the third part of those dismissals were assumed by the Galician shipyards of Bazán (Ferrol) and ASTANO (Fene) extending the crisis to the region wich was declared Industrial Zone in Declivity. And this happens in a country like Galiza, clasified as Region Objective 1 in the European cohesion plans. Also, we might not forget that throughout this time, no efforts have been made to attract capitals. No investiments in I+D to increase our competitiveness were done, letting the same time the WTO to allow the competition of the southeast asia shipyards, empowered by low wage costs and direct aids from their governements.

The solution to this new crisis cannot happen through more dismissals in the region of Ferrolterra.

It was not a bloodless catastrophe at all. Thousands of seabirds, mammals and other species died, beeing some of them under extinction threatening as the arao, our native penguin. Manfried, the "German of Camelhe" died also, uncapable to stood the pain of seeing his recent nightmare becoming reality.

Now, two years later, Apostolos Mangouras, a man of seventy years old who received the "Captain of the year 2002" prize, a man who was jailed against the international conventions, also dies now trapped in the Spanish penitentiary system, beeing the mediatic scapegoat of the spanish and galician authorities in their commitment to hide and diminish their responsibility in the greatest European catastrophe since the nuclear accident of Cernobil.

Let's denounce this situation to demand its freedom there where we were, let's join the freedom for Apostolos Mangouras campaign, and let's take the initiative to prevent the death of Mangouras in prison as one more of the "colateral damages" of the incompetence, the laziness and the irresponsibility of our governors.
